Fairly often, people ask me how HealthyTalk Decision-making (HealthyTalk or HTDm) compares with processes such as Appreciative Inquiry (AI) and Non-violent Communication (NVC). The short answer is that they are great together! These compatible processes are synergistic.
Overall HealthyTalk– Announce, Dialogue, Decide, and Share, or ADDS – is a process for collaborative decision-making. Within the process dialogue is vitally important. Both AI and NVC are healthy, life-affirming, respectful ways to engage in conversation. AI is great for getting people to focus on what’s working in an organization, while at the same time honoring the past, getting in touch with the organization’s values, and looking forward to the future. In NVC, based on a book by Marshall Rosenberg, provides a process and a way of being in dialogue that encourages people to look beyond behaviors and get to the underlying needs and values.
You can find certified NVC trainers nation-wide (probably world-wide). Try searching online for NVC trainers. Also, Marshall Rosenberg’s book, Non-Violent Communication, and books by others, such as Lucy Leu’s Nonviolent Communication Companion Workbook: A Practical Guide for Individual, Group or Classroom Study, are great.

For Appreciative Inquiry, you can check in your area for people who know AI and can do training and facilitation. David L. Cooperrider developed AI. Another leading writer and trainer is Diana Whitney. In the Pacific Northwest, Rob Voyle, Clergy Leadership Institute, is a trainer from Portland, Oregon. Again, look in your area for trainers and facilitators.
